Peter,

Excellent op-ed. My brother Gary and I recently became new clients of Euro-Pacific.

In future articles I urge you to remind people that the name for the kind of government "tin-pot dictators" impose is Fascism, and that is the slippery slope that government in the US is now on. Fascism is private ownership of property in name only, but where that basic individual right is made impotent by a tight web of controls so fine that people cannot exercise it in practice. For example, you own a property but you cannot build on it because the local zoning board refuses to give you a permit, because to do so does not fit their political agenda.

The US gets more Fascist every day. Today, at every level of government, officials interfere with our individual rights. There are federal regulations and arbitrary directives issued by the executive branch as you pointed out, but Congress and the courts are no less guilty. Likewise for state governments who follow the feds or worse, such as the CA Air Resources Board, which is now talking about banning black cars in California! Even at the local level, zoning boards in small towns routinely violate property rights and get away with it. And the Republicans are as guilty as the Democrats in this regard.

To gain perspective, people need to see comparisons between the behavior of our government and those of Putin's Russia and Hugo Chavez. The differences are getting smaller, and it is a disgrace.

Why don't you start publishing a quarterly "freedom and status of individual rights" meter that compares the US to a range of 4-5 dictatorships from Russia to N. Korea. I think people would be surprised at the results, surprised at how their freedom is being whittled away.

While you are at it, clarify the difference between the socialist idea of "human rights" vs. the concept of Individual Rights the US is based on. Here is a video that explains what I mean: http://arc-tv.com/republican-party-of-virginia-2009-state-convention%E2%80%94opening-breakfast-address/

More information is available at the ARC website. Keep up the good work!

What can we expect from a Govt. that has been lying to the AMERICAN people from time immemorial? And a CONGRESS that consists of a DEN of thieves and liars who will do anything to protect their funders who are actually their REAL MASTERS and NOT the american public whom they are supposed to serve in the first place. Actually
why waste time on this blame game when we know its the american people who elected these scums to be their LEADERS!

I am glad to see that someone is finally writing about this "unjustified taking" by our government. This goes beyond socialism and is bordering on communism. I don't know how, but someone needs to put a stop to the destruction of rights in this country by our government. I never, ever thought the supreme court would let this stand. Now the third, "independent" branch of our government cannot be entrusted to do what is right according to law and on behalf of the people.

Who will ever buy a bond again if they know the Government can disregard the law and take what they want?

"Recently released e-mails make it clear that the government threatened to remove corporate leaders if they failed to go through with the merger and keep quiet about the losses."

Nuff said, get rid of Lewis, Bernanke, and Paulson NOW. They have lied, broken the law on several counts, and can NO LONGER be trusted.

Perhaps America will take action during the next American Idle (misspelling intentional) commercial break.
