BAC shot itself multiple times in the feet.  You mentioned Merrill Lynch and Countrywide.  However, just prior to that, they acquired Delaware-based MBNA credit card business, and prior to that, LaSalle National Bank in Chicago.

Please note that MBNA and LaSalle had their share of serious credit deterioration.  If you go to FDIC.gov website and go to analysis section, you could pull out prior financials on these institutions pre-BAC acquisition of them.  And you will note they were in deep trouble prior to BAC acquisition.  So, BAC bought 4 acquisition...all carrying problem baggage.
