[...] That’s why it’s not accurate to assume bailout opponents share the same opinions on the bailout as foreign automakers. As Money Morning previously reported, it’s more than just Big Three employees on the line. [...]

Detroit has no need of resources to research fuel efficient personal transportation. They have it in house or readily available through alliances. They need the money for accelerating development and tooling and production. They need the will to serve the market rather than chasing illusory high profit margined vehicles. They need their cost structure (pensions and medical plans) rationalized. They will end up being owned by the 'govmit' and the labor force. Their equity is shot. They need a de facto prepackaged Chapter 11 (coerced, or otherwise) with labor taking a haircut on very generous and onerous benefits. If the market can be persuaded to recapitalize them and take them off the hands of the new 'owners', the sooner the better.

The UAW needs a little tough love. It derailed the Cerberus deal at Delphi. Today GM suffers a loss of about $2,000 per vehicle sold. On the other hand Toyota whose employees are not part of the UAW earns a profit of about $1,200 per vehicle sold. If GM was able to operate with labor prices near Toyota’s it would have pocketed an additional $29,715,200,000.
